Common Reasons a Dryer Won’t Start:

559 Appliance Repair Visalia | Visalia Dryer Repair Experts

Power problems

Gas Dryer and Electric Dryer Incoming power may be the problem with your dryer, if it’s an electric dryer that isn’t working. Check your breakers and wall outlet. If you have a gas dryer - To check this, unplug the dryer and plug something else in the outlet. If the device won’t turn on, then a circuit breaker or fuse could be at fault.

If the circuit breaker or fuse is functioning, then use a multimeter tester to check the outlet. If it turns out to be the wall outlet going to the dryer it is most likely either

Bad Breaker or Bad Receptacle Plug.

Thermal Fuse:

Dryer wont Start A Thermal Fuse or also known as a Blower House Fuse is the most common Dryer problem and is almost always due to a clogged dryer vent, or being pushed to far back against the wall. If it had been pushed back to far, (making it not be able to ventilate properly), then it most likely be your thermal fuse, or it could have a massive build up inside that is restricting the airflow.

A Thermal fuse is a safety device that is mandatory by law, it protects your dryer from overheating and combusting Catching your home on Fire!. You’ll find the thermal fuse on the blower housing usually, if its not there, then check the heating element area on an electric dryer or the burner area on a gas dryer.
Door Switch:

Dryer Wont Turn On That clicking you hear when you shut your dryer’s door is the dryer door switch. The clicking noise means the dryer door switch is activating. If the door switch is clicking when you press it, then it’s most likely functioning. If there’s no click, you’ll need to replace the door switch. Also if your not sure just check it for continuity

Tip: When your checking the dryer door switch for continuity, make sure to click the  switch on the dryer door as you test it .. Or if you don’t take it off the dryer, you could just test the dryer door switch with the dryer door shut.

Drive Belt:

Dryer Wont Spin If your dryer motor turns on but the drum isn’t turning, you’ll want to check the drive belt. However, some dryers have a switch that turns it off if the belt is broken.

Either way, you’ll want to replace the drive belt.

How to Replace Dryer Door Switch 559 Appliance Repair - Fresno & Tulare County   If an electrical current can run through it. The path is not broken It should show Continuity. Which means that the continuity is broken, your dryer won’t work. The easiest way to test for continuity is with a multimeter tester. If there’s no continuity, you’ll need to replace the thermal fuse and clean the dryer’s venting before starting it back up again.   Dryer Start Switch: Dryer Repair It’s somewhat simple to detect if a start switch is working. Try to start your dryer. If you hear a hum but it doesn’t start, then the start switch is okay. If nothing happens when you attempt to start your dryer, then you’ll need to check the continuity with a multimeter tester as described above.     No continuity? Time to replace the start switch. How to change dryer start button quick guide 559 Appliance Repair - Fresno & Tulare County     C      Dryer Drive Motor The dryer drive motor is what makes the dryer’s drum turn and the blower wheel to spin . If you’ve already checked reasons 1-3 above and still haven't found your problem..

Is your the dryer motor still humming but not working? you’ll need to replace the dryer motor. Remove the belt from the motor and check the blower wheel for any obstructions. If it’s obstruction-free, the motor is probably no good and needs replacing.

Dryer Buzzes If your dryer motor just hums when you press the start button, that’s a definite sign that there is something wrong with the motor. If you have a dryer that is only buzzing when you press start I have some good news!

. Hopefully its good news for you.. You may be able to stop the dryer from humming by removing an object out of the blower wheel housing. We have seen it many times where a rag or a screwdriver falls down into the lint Shute, wedges into the blower wheel causing it to become stuck and stops the motor from turning, once the object is removed the dryer starts spinning again.

If its your first time it will take you about 60 mins.

Dryer Belt Switch - Gas Dryer and Electric Dryer Not all dryer models have a belt switch. You’ll want to check your owner’s manual or search using your model number to see if it does. If your dryer does have a switch belt, start it and listen for a humming noise.

If you hear a hum, then the belt switch is fine. If there’s no hum, use a multimeter to test the switch for continuity. No continuity when it’s running? New belt switch.

  Dryer Main Control Board

Gas Dryer and Electric Dryer It’s not often that the main control board is to blame if your drying won’t work. However, if you’ve determined that all of the above parts are in good shape, you’ll probably want to replace the main control board. While there’s no easy test to see if it’s functioning, the main control board sometimes shows signs of burning or a shorted out component if it’s defective.

Dryer Timer:

Dryer Repair Visalia Ca. A dryer’s timer is essentially your last hope, If none of the parts above are faulty, it may be time to replace the timer. As with the main control board, you can’t easily test a timer to see if it’s functioning or not, if it's not,  your best bet is to just replace it.

Unfortunately the cost of a timer or control for either a washing machine or dryer can be very expensive. We suggest doing a price check before deciding to replace it or buy a new one.

What to do if Gas Dryer isnt Heating?   first thing to do when you're having heating issues with a gas dryer is, go to the very front of the clothes dryer, if you look down at the bottom in the front of the dryer you will see a little square, you can pop that out and then it becomes of viewing hole so you could see inside to where the flame sensor, combustion chamber and the flame igniter is.     (FYI:) That’s not me in this picture lol )   Once you remove the square turn the dryer on then get down and look through the window.

Did the Gas Dryers Glow Igniter Glow, but not light the Fire?   If a gas dryers glow igniter glowed red but the burner assembly did not catch on fire, that tells you half of heating control circuit is  properly working. If the dryer glows but does not ignite a flame:
  • High Limit Thermostat
  •  Cycling Thermostat
  •  Thermal Fuse
  • Thermal Cutoff Fuse
  • Glow Igniter
  • Flame Sensor
are all working and functioning properly.       Did the Dryers Glow Igniter Not Glow at All?

If your Dryers Glow Igniter did not glow, Its most likely one of 3 things:
  • Thermal Fuse
  • Glow Igniter
  • Control Board or Timer
If your gas dryer gets hot only for a few minutes and then shuts off, then its one of two things:   gas valve coil   High Limit Thermostat     That was easy enough right ? Knowing and referencing this information Greatly simplifies your dryer repair significantly.   What's Next ?   Now at this point, there is 2 things you need to know before you can continue forward with your dryer repair. In the next section we will cover those "2 must knows".

Tip:  if you don’t take the dryer door switch off the dryer, and keep the dryer door closed you can easily test it and get a proper reading.
